Self Compassion
How often do you catch yourself turning a simple misstep into a whole story about who you are?
When things don't go according to plan, it’s so easy to slip into self-criticism.
But when we default to harsh internal judgment, shame almost always follows right behind it.
There’s a huge difference between recognizing a mistake ("I dropped the ball") and turning it into a judgment on your character ("I'm just bad at this").
When self-criticism takes over, a tough day, an awkward moment, or a missed goal stops feeling like a temporary setback and starts feeling like personal proof that you aren't enough.
Stepping away from that cycle isn't about ignoring where things went wrong.
It’s simply about giving yourself enough grace to separate what you did from who you are.
Here are a few ways to soften that harsh inner voice when it creeps in:
🗣️ Notice the tone of your self-talk: Catch yourself in the moment and ask, "Would I ever speak to a friend or colleague this way?"
🌱 Separate your actions from your identity: Remind yourself that a mistake is just an event—it’s something that happened, not who you are as a person.
🤍 Offer yourself a little patience: Give yourself the same understanding, grace, and room to learn that you so easily give to others.
Unlearning the habit of harsh self-criticism takes time, but replacing shame with self-compassion is one of the most powerful shifts you can make for your mental well-being.
Save this for the next time your inner critic gets a little too loud and you need a quick reset. 📌
