Holistic and Somatic Therapy

Image
Where you receive therapy is just as important as the type of therapy you choose. Many people feel frustrated with therapy, not because it doesn’t work, but because the system itself can make it harder to heal. Large, corporate, and insurance-based therapy practices often prioritize efficiency, which can sometimes lead to: Limited sessions based on insurance policies rather than actual need High caseloads that make personalized care difficult A feeling of being just another number rather than a person with unique needs While not every large practice operates this way, these systemic challenges can make it harder to receive the deep, transformative care you deserve. Here at Life By Design Therapy ™ , we do things differently. We offer: Personalized care – You aren’t rushed through sessions or treated like just another client. Your healing journey is at the center of our work. More freedom & flexibility – Since we don’t rely on insurance to dictate care, we can focus on what’...

Distraction isn't Always Laziness

Image
I used to think distraction meant I wasn’t trying hard enough, like I just needed more focus or better discipline. But I realized that distraction isn’t always about willpower. Sometimes, it’s your nervous system gently saying, “This is too much.” When we’re in survival mode, whether from chronic stress, burnout, trauma , or just too much on our plates, our focus can slip. Not because we’re lazy, but because our body is trying to protect us from overwhelm. Instead of pushing through, it can help to pause and ask: 🌱 Have I actually rested lately? 🌱 Am I avoiding something that feels hard to face? 🌱 What have I been brushing past or stuffing down? Distraction isn’t a flaw, but rather a message. One that says: you’ve been carrying a lot, and it’s okay to slow down. In my blog , I discuss more about this & ways you can support yourself when you’re feeling the need to distract and disconnect. Image
When you're living with depression, even the smallest tasks can feel heavy. Your body might feel disconnected, numb, or like it’s just going through the motions. That’s not failure, it’s your nervous system doing its best to cope. 💛 These gentle, body-based tips can help you begin reconnecting with yourself, one small moment at a time: ✔️ Notice what’s there – Tune into your chest, jaw, or stomach. Name what you feel. ✔️ Connect through sensation – Touch something grounding: a blanket, a warm mug, a pet. ✔️ Take moments to rest – Rest without guilt. You don’t have to earn it. ✔️ Create rhythms, not routines – Light a candle. Open a window. Let life move in small, doable ways. ✔️ Include gentle movement – Sway, stretch, or wiggle your toes. ✔️ Seek support – This step can be difficult for some, but I want you to know that you don’t have go through this alone. The Real Reason Self-Compassion Feels Uncomfortable

Image
Imagine you're cooking dinner and accidentally grab the handle of a hot pan. You feel the burn and immediately pull your hand away. You run it under cool water, find something to treat it, and you're probably a little more careful the next time you reach for that pan.  When we experience physical pain, we instinctively know that whatever is injured needs care and attention. However, when we experience emotional pain , we don’t always respond the same way – with care and attention. Mindfulness Practices

Image
Navigating tight deadlines, packed calendars, and constant demands can easily pull your attention in a dozen different directions at once. When your mind is already racing ahead to the next item on your agenda, mindfulness isn't about completely emptying your head, it’s simply about anchoring yourself so you can respond to your day with clarity instead of chaos. Swipe through to explore 5 grounded ways to bring a little more presence into your routine: 1️⃣ Observe: Pausing to notice what’s going on around and inside you, without rushing to fix or change a thing. 2️⃣ Acceptance: Giving yourself permission to feel whatever is present right now, even if it's frustration or fatigue, without fighting against it. 3️⃣ Non-Judgmental Awareness: Viewing your thoughts as passing moments rather than assigning labels like "good" or "bad". 4️⃣ Focused Attention: Choosing one simple anchor, like a slow breath or the exact task in front of you, to keep your mind from...

Ways to Relieve Tension

Image
Carrying full schedules and high expectations means physical tension has a way of quietly settling in. You might notice your shoulders creeping up toward your ears during an afternoon call, or realize you’ve been clenching your jaw while powering through a busy afternoon. Holding stress in the body is completely human, but keeping it bottled up is what leads to burnout. Letting go of that physical pressure doesn't require hours off your calendar, it just takes a few intentional moments to give your system a reset. Here are 5 ways to release tension today: 1️⃣ Notice where you're holding stress: Becoming aware of a tight chest or stiff shoulders is the first step toward letting it go. 2️⃣ Pause for a deep breath: A slow, intentional inhale followed by a longer exhale signals to your body that it’s safe to unwind. 3️⃣ Talk it out: Unpacking what’s on your mind with a trusted friend, colleague, or therapist helps clear the mental clutter. 4️⃣ Ground yourself in the present: ...

When you’re used to keeping everything running smoothly, burnout rarely hits all at once. It’s usually a quiet, gradual shift, pushing through "just one more busy week" until your mind and body are running completely on empty. If things have felt a little heavier or more exhausting lately, swipe through to check in with these 5 signs to know if you might be in survival mode: 1️⃣ Little things set you off: Tiny interruptions, sudden changes, or minor delays end up feeling way more frustrating than they normally would. 2️⃣ Existing instead of living: Going through your workday on complete autopilot, just checking boxes rather than actually feeling present. 3️⃣ Trouble focusing: Struggling to focus, losing your train of thought, or taking twice as long to finish routine tasks. 4️⃣ Feeling anxious or out of control: Carrying a constant, quiet buzz of tension that makes it tough to settle down. 5️⃣ Wanting to pull away: Craving total isolation or canceling plans because you...

Stress Management

Image
Ever had one of those days where a minor bump in your schedule completely throws you off, or a sudden wave of fatigue hits out of nowhere? Even when we think we’ve checked every task off our list and moved past a busy season, our bodies often hold onto the residue of that stress long after our calendars have cleared. Our nervous system is constantly working behind the scenes to keep us safe. It picks up on quiet cues, holds physical tension in our shoulders or jaws, and remembers past pressure, even when our minds feel ready to move on. Shifting how we view these moments changes the whole picture. Instead of getting frustrated and asking yourself why you feel so drained, you can simply ask what your body might be trying to tell you right now. Supporting your nervous system doesn't require an hour-long routine; it can be as simple as stepping away from your screen for a minute, taking a slow breath, and dropping your shoulders. Listening to your body is a daily practice of patienc...
